When you are working in the new way of combining caring for the children and work, the school holidays need a little preparation. Taking a few steps before the summer holidays start can make all the difference to a strong fresh start in September and also to a great summer.
So, here are a few thoughts and suggestions:
S: Support
Start looking for flexible support. Explore opportunities locally maybe a local student, a family you know with an older child, a local au-pair or check out new online support systems such as studentnannies.com.
U: Unplug
Try to find a time to switch off from technology. Holidays away can often provide a great opportunity to do it. You will feel refreshed and more inspired after. Often our best ideas come to us when we’ve had time away.
It’s also a good idea to have specific periods of time where you’re able to unplug. For example, when you go for a walk with the children, leave your phone at home. You’ll find that you are much more mindful and ‘in the moment’ too which the kids will appreciate.
Make sure you put your phone away at a certain time every night, for example, 8pm. This will also have a lovely, positive effect on your sleep!
M: Meditate
Headspace is something you need the most in the holidays in particular when you are moving between caring and working in short periods of time. Check out apps such as Headspace and Calm. It will really help make the transition between work and caring much smoother. Grabbing 10 minutes at the start of the day, before the kids wake up, can help you stay calmer and have a positive impact on the rest of the day!
M: Me
Taking a moment to focus on you. Making a note of what you might want to achieve now in preparation for September and planning a few steps towards that. It doesn’t need many to make all the difference. Whether it’s training, finding a flexible role, moving forward with a business idea, whatever it might be, start to focus on the intention.
Find groups and content that inspires you and connects you with ideas and opportunities. You can join our Beyond the School Run Facebook group and recently launched ‘Flexible working for Mums’ Facebook group.
E: Exercise
If exercise is important you to, try to take time for it. An early run or going to a class, this can really help you get into your work flow when windows of time open up. There are also more and more online resources for exercises at home, look for those who inspire you.
R: Rest
And don’t forget to Rest. Juggling work and childcare over the summer can be hard. Don’t forget that you need time to rest and re-charge too.
I have more thoughts on preparing for September in my book ‘A New Way for Mothers’ which is available on Amazon.co.uk.
