How To Make Your Bedroom A Sleep Sanctuary – 5 Quick Steps To Styling Success

Nothing beats the feeling of a good night’s sleep does it?

To wake up, feeling refreshed and positive, ready to start a new day.

Well-being, interiors and how a bedroom makes you feel are so important to your everyday living. To find your happy space, where you can feel calm and tranquil or rejuvenated and full of energy.

Whatever you want from your interior space, there are tricks of the trade to influencing how a room feels.

Here Design Director of My Interior Design School, Rachael Kilby-Tyre (BIID) reveals her 5 quick steps to make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary.

Calming Colours

“There are certain colours that help the feeling of well-being,” says Rachael, “and the most obvious colour choice is green, the colour of nature.”

Decorating and styling with tints, tones and hues of green will create a restful and serene feeling in a bedroom. You’ll feel calm, relaxed and ready for a good night’s sleep.

A sense of well-being is very personal of course, so you could choose a different colour that makes you feel happy and relaxed, to create your own bedroom sanctuary.

Soft tones of violet could help restful sleep, as it is a colour that has calming qualities.

Sarah, a My Interior Design School student created this mood board for her tranquil, calm bedroom scheme.

Colours To Avoid

“Do avoid certain colours though”, advises Rachael, “such as yellow and orange, which are known to stimulate mental activity, so could result in a restless night.”

Make It Personal

Whether you’re decorating your own home, restyling for friends or designing for clients, making a space feel personal, will add harmony and personality to a bedroom scheme.

Accessorise the room with items that bring joy and happy memories.

Fresh crisp bed linen is always a delight to sleep in, so choose good quality bedding with natural fibres for a restful night.

Fragrance should be considered too, so fresh flowers or a delicious smelling candle should be on your well-being list.

Lighting Design For A Bedroom

A considered lighting design is essential for a bedroom to feel like a sanctuary.

Suitable lighting for snuggling up in bed to read a good book, a picture light to illuminate a favourite piece of art and candles for creating an ambient atmosphere, will bring a sense of calmness to your space.

Making Sense

Designing for the senses will also improve a sense of well-being and that feeling of serenity.

Try and use a variety of textures in a bedroom décor. Perhaps add a cosy, fluffy throw on the bed and a thick pile rug or carpet to sink your toes into. Furniture with a natural element, upcycled pieces and vintage finds will give the space personality and feel authentic.

House Plants, Well-being And Interiors

The latest trend for biophilia design, where spaces are designed to connect the occupant to the natural environment, has proved that adding house plants to a scheme, adds a sense of well-being to an interior space.

Choose plants to enhance your bedroom style.

“I hope you have found these steps useful. Have fun restyling your new bedroom space and making it feel like a sanctuary” – Rachael.
