Conversations. They’re part of our daily life, whether they’re a digital conversation with co-workers, phone calls with loved ones, or in-person talks (the best kind of conversation, in my humble opinion). However normal conversing is, I think as human beings, we take a lot of the opportunities that having a conversation offers us, for granted.
Have you ever been so frustrated with the way things were? Do you wake up on a daily basis and consistently wish things were different in some way?
One Simple Ask
What if I told you most, if not all, of your troubles could be solved with one simple task?
I know what you’re thinking. What’s this digital marketing blogger know about my life?
Well, I don’t really know anything about you, let alone the things you’re combating on a daily basis. But I do know that quite often – more often than you’d think – a simple ask can save you a world of trouble.
That simple solution is easily implemented into something you’re already doing daily – conversing!
Stuck In A Professional Rut
Let’s say that you’re stuck in a professional rut. I know I was.
I was pretty unhappy in my job of almost 6 years. Whilst I liked what I did, my day-to-day started to feel boring. I didn’t feel like I was evolving as a content writer, which was frustrating because I started to feel less valuable to the agency I worked for and eventually, my own creative endeavours started suffering as a result.
When I couldn’t muster the energy to write creatively for myself anymore, I decided to start asking.
A new job was going to get me out of that rut, so I started asking around. I scoured job boards, networked on LinkedIn, asked family members about their companies. Eventually I found a role that was going to be new and challenging but within the scope of my abilities.
While leaving my old job – the comfort, the status, the perks included – behind was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do, I followed through with my ask and have already learnt a lot during the transition.
Change
Change doesn’t come from comfort, you know? I have already started to evolve as a professional, earning more money, and bolstering my portfolio with new projects, all because of a simple ask.
Maybe it’s not professional for you. Perhaps you’re dealing with something more personal.
If you’re anything like me, you can get wrapped up in your own thoughts. Whether I’m considering all the ways I think I’ve messed up in a day or thinking ahead into the future and wondering how I’ll ever have enough time to raise a child and enjoy my life, I’m the kind of person who makes up problems before they’ve even manifested.
It’s a personal mental health struggle for me and it’s something I’m not sure how to deal with.
So what do I do?
I ask.
I’ve asked friends and family members who have dealt with anxiety before how they dealt with their individual challenges. I’ve asked Google to turn up search results about the best ways to deal with anxiety, both on your own and with the help of a professional.
It’s about asking for help.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re asking your mum, your friend, your God, or even the universe. What matters is that you’re asking. In order to make changes in our lives, no matter how big or small, sometimes all we have to do is ask.
