By Lindsey Hood. Lindsey Hood, 41, is a gentle but powerful qualified life and executive coach who specialises in working with women across the globe including; the USA, Canada, Africa and the UK….who secretly struggle with imposter syndrome.
She describes herself as an introvert first and foremost, however, this does not define her lifestyle and she is on a mission to show others that their personality trait needn’t hinder their way of life. Lindsey recently became a global bestselling author on Amazon book charts after the release of her debut book ‘Live a Big Life in a Quiet Way: Strategies for introverted women to overcome imposter syndrome’.
Self-Confessed Introvert
She said; “As a self-confessed introvert, I understand the fear that comes with the thought of putting myself ‘out there’ and doing things that are outside my comfort zone, such as speaking in front of groups of people, or recording a video for my business. If you are happy with your life as it is, great! If you are not, you do have a choice. You either keep doing what you are doing and getting the results you are currently getting, or you can choose to take action and make a change.
Confidence
I believe confidence is like a muscle, and like any muscle, to keep it toned and strong, you need to exercise it regularly. Exercise for confidence is taking action. It is uncomfortable. I wish there was a way to sugar coat it, but that is the truth!
It takes work and it takes courage to keep doing the things that scare you but these 5 strategies will make this much easier for you to start that new confidence building exercise routine!”
Create Your Own Achievement Evidence Bank
List out everything you can do today that once you didn’t know how to do. This simple exercise can show you how things that once seemed impossible are now things you take for granted, such as driving a car or creating a powerpoint presentation or cooking a great lasagne!
Yes, you will be facing something different next time, but having your own evidence that you can ride this out, it will become easier, and you will accomplish it, can give you inner confidence in your abilities to cope and be resourceful.
Reframe Your Feelings
You often feel like an imposter when you are trying something new – for example, a new job role, or a new hobby or leisure activity. Accept that when you are learning something new these feelings are natural for you and part of the change cycle.
Reframe your thinking and embrace it as a good thing.. It means you are learning and growing!
Remember You Are Not Alone
Remember you are not alone in how you are feeling and the image you see is not necessarily the same as how someone is feeling.
Statistically, 70% of us will struggle with feelings of self-doubt and that we are not good enough at some point in our lives. Let that sink in for a second. That means 7 out of 10 people you know either have had, currently have or will in the future, have some level of self doubt.
You are viewing people as capable, competent and confident, (which is the same way they are viewing you, by the way!) but the majority of us are likely to be feeling different on the inside. These feelings may hold you back but realising that you are not alone in how your feeling and that others can still take actions and live a life on their terms can help give you strength to do the same.
Decide What You Want To Achieve And How You Want Your Life To Be
If you have resigned yourself to being and living a certain way, now is the time to let your imagination run wild and write down the life you would love to be leading. Questions that can help open your mind include: What is your life purpose? What do you love doing? Who did your 10 year old self want to grow up into? What about your 70 year old self – what will you regret not doing or being? What is on your bucket list? Is there somewhere you would like to see in the world? Let yourself dream big and don’t censor yourself!
Create A Plan
Identify one thing from strategy #4 that you really want to achieve. Now think about exactly what you need to do to get from where you are now to the place where you have achieved this goal. Do you need to learn a new skill? Do you need to ask someone for help? Do you need to do some online research? Do you need to save some money? Do you need to get up earlier in the morning? Do you need to network or update your CV?
Start listing out every step you need to take and a realistic deadline for completing this. Next, identify what is the one action you can take today to start moving you towards your goal? Now, take that action!
Once you have started you can keep the momentum by identifying and doing the one small action each and every day. Remember, if you can change by 1% per day, in 100 days you will have changed by 100%!
