Succeeding As A Woman In A Male-Dominated Workplace

male-dominated industry

You don’t have to compete with men or dampen down your femininity to succeed in a male-dominated workplace.

We all believe in and work for a future which sees true gender equality, and while some professions are achieving this today, others are still dominated by men, as they have done for years. And yes, women are sometimes treated differently to their male co-workers.

By speaking up and inspiring conversations, we have the opportunity to learn from each other and support each other instead of competing.

Rather than simply trying to be ‘one of the boys’ try these top tips for making it through and succeeding as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry…

Play To Your Strengths

Know your best qualities and capitalise on them. Focus on attracting and surrounding yourself with the right people and clients. We are all different and unique, there is a niche for everyone, whether your approach is assertive or understated, calculated or creative. The main thing is to own who you are and what can you offer.

Ignore Stereotypes And Don’t Let Them Get To You

Women leaders are sometimes perceived negatively, especially in more conservative societies. Assertiveness is seen as bossiness, and passion and empathy as weaknesses. Look past such comments, stay confident, remember what you are doing and why and just keep going!

Don’t Compete, But Find Allies

Surround yourself with comrades, whether male or female. Identify people’s strengths and delegate tasks that you know will inspire them. Be smart and don’t be afraid to ask for support or help.

Build A Network

When women support each other, incredible things happen! Find women that are just as strong and have each other’s back.

Use Your Instincts For Successful Communication And Negotiation

It could be argued that women have higher emotional intelligence than men. Many women undervalue and forget about their nature, trying to develop traditional ‘male’ qualities instead. But in fact, being able to sense a situation and take action in ways that others don’t or can’t is much more important for success.

You have your unique characteristics for a reason, make the most of them.

Set The Boundaries

Be kind to your colleagues, but set clear boundaries from the beginning. By communicating clearly and calmly and keeping a professional attitude, you will be able to develop excellent professional relationships.

Knowledge Is Power

It is true you will need to prove that you know your subject and you are as smart as your peers. It may be irritating, but take this as a challenge and get out of the situation as a winner.

Take Ownership Of Your Accomplishments

When you achieve something at work, share it with your team and your boss. Taking ownership and pride in your name and achievements will keep you ready and prepared for new opportunities or promotions.

Don’t Be Afraid To Fail

Last, but not least, don’t fear failure. It is not something negative but on the contrary, an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and grow. Take (measured) risks, and again, fall and stand up back. Each time you will get better, smarter and faster.
