We live in an unprecedented time with the instance of social media everywhere. It has never been more important for people to stop, look in the mirror and think, “am I projecting who I am and what I do, with the way I look”.
The Way You Look Tells A Story
Unfortunately, we are programmed to judge people in less than a minute, even before we say anything; this includes photos, videos, webinars, Facebook live etc. or when we meet people for the first time. Science has shown that an unfavourable impression stays with us until we have had 18 x 30-minute meetings to undo it.
With summer coming up this is a good time to ask an expert to appraise colours and style. Anyone who knows which colours and styles work best for them saves themselves a heap of money and time.
The shops are awash with bright colours now. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and just pick up the first thing, hoping it will do. In my experience, you can’t rely on a sales assistant unless you know and trust them, they may be thankful to make a sale!
Did you know that 93% of product buying decisions are based on colour alone?
My Top Style Tips Are:
Get Your Colours Right
If you don’t know, ask an expert to select your own unique colour palette and then show you how to mix and match them to suit your personality and or business, creating a colour brand for you and your business.
Fabrics
Choose light weight comfortable fabrics for summer, that preferably don’t crease easily. Crepes, jerseys, lightweight cotton or silk knits, lightweight cottons, linen, silk, and man-made fabrics that let your skin breathe are perfect for those hot days at home and abroad.
Watch For Creasing!
Linen is lovely but be realistic whether the outfit will crease badly when sitting down. Also check man-made fabrics don’t crease. Always sit down in it before you buy. I bought a dress last year thinking it would be fine to wear to a business lunch with people I had never met after a 4 hour train journey. Luckily I wore it before going to London, found it creased really badly after sitting in it for an hour. I was staying over so was able to change into it just before the train arrived. Washable fabrics for everyday use save time and money at the dry cleaners.
Sizing
Styles that have a little room in them for you to move around especially if you are on your feet at work. Go for the correct size or slightly too big than too small if you are between sizes. Only this morning a hairdresser said her dress for work was nice to wear except that it was a bit tight under her arms and rubbed them. She has to wear this for work until October. Choose looser fitting blouses or shirts as there is nothing that looks and feels more uncomfortable than tight clothes on a hot day.
How To Get Noticed
Spots and florals are everywhere this year. I love the navy and white jumpsuits, and the spotted dresses, there is a lot of red around too. Red looks lovely in summer and ensures you to stand out from the crowd and get noticed when networking, socialising or partying.
Tailored Navy Blazer
This season’s tailored navy blazer is a versatile staple for any wardrobe. You can dress it up, dress it down, it is easy to wear for casual events, work events and social events. Choose a well tailored and flattering style in the navy that works for you. If you have a cool palette choose a cool navy, if you have a warm palette choose a warm navy. Ideal for men and women. Jumpsuits are comfortable and can be a really elegant alternative to a dress.
Wedges
Wedges are lovely for everyday summer. For a more elegant look, heels and strappy sandals with heels. Make sure they are comfortable, there is nothing worse than ill fitting shoes on a hot day.
Some TLC
Feet, toes and legs may need some tlc after a long winter. Fake tan is a good staple at this time of the year giving you that healthy looking bronzed glow without worrying about getting burnt.
Adding Some Drama
Tailored jackets and suits in block colours create a more formal and professional look. Add some drama and interest with bright contrasting accessories in either shoes, bags jewellery, scarf or hat.
Complement Your Natural Colouring
I like to have a slightly shorter hair in summer. It’s cooler and easier to manage. Really important, if you colour it, is to make sure the colourist uses tones that complement your natural colouring. I have had several clients recently who took my advice and showed the colourist their palette and asked them to use warmer tones instead of the cool ones they had. The difference in how much better they looked was astonishing and they immediately got loads of complements from their friends and family.
And A Last Tip
Lastly please don’t wear grey unless you have white or grey hair and you mix it with bright colours to show off your eyes.
