5 Ways To Get Motivated To Get Fit
In these times of peak health and fitness spam, it’s important to remind ourselves what health and fitness is actually about.
If you’re just starting out or you’re already on the road to getting fit, let me give you a few tips from my own experience on how to keep the momentum going.
It’s OK To Feel Self-Conscious – It Will Pass
Remember that every single person you see in a gym/class environment will feel self-conscious or vulnerable, if not right now, then at some point.
Remember why you’re here; you’re here for a reason. Don’t put yourself off. It helps to remind yourself that everyone had to start somewhere. People who look like they know what they’re doing are probably winging it a bit and a lot of the people you’re looking at are probably feeling just as vulnerable as you.
Check In On Your Self-Talk
Fundamentally, we can change the way we talk to ourselves. We would never speak to a friend the way we speak to ourselves sometimes. Instead of using negative language try switching to words that put you in control rather than words that are denying you from reaching an objective.
You are not too fat, too stiff, too old – you have every right to be in the gym, on that running track or in that class. You’re great, I promise! The most important thing is starting somewhere. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can progress with just consistency and patience.
Try Different Things And Find What You Love
Try everything, mix it up and keep yourself interested. The class you have been avoiding might be the one thing that gives you the buzz to keep going back.
I’ve found that a group environment can really help push me along through early sessions where I might be inclined to do a soft session and not really get the best from the time I have. And remember, everyone else in the class will be focused on themselves and concentrating too much on what they’re doing to be looking at anyone else (You!).
Self-Consciousness Can Be Crippling – Learn To Let Go
Self-consciousness can be crippling and stands in the way of so much enjoyment. If you do something just once, every subsequent time it gets easier.
And let go! My favourite part of taking a dance class for example, is when I see people throwing themselves into the routine and relaxing into what they’re doing. We don’t have to be perfect, we just need to do our best and work towards our goals with enjoyment, positivity and balance.
Focus On YOU Not A Social Media Image
Don’t let yourself get dragged into a comparison war. Focus on you and what you want to achieve. My rule with social media is that if it upsets me, knots my stomach, makes me feel old/fat/ugly/insert all number of other things – I simply unfollow or don’t follow in the first place.
You may see something/someone and think it’s something to aspire to. However, it’s not you and ultimately you’ll just be chasing someone else’s life rather than just living your own. Just check yourself when you’re scrolling, if something makes you feel inferior you probably don’t need that in your life.
